Save For College - How To Start

No matter how old your child is, it is not too late to save for college. In order to save for college, you have to start somewhere. Start by taking a few dollars and putting it into an envelope. This will be the college fund for your child.

If you smoke, quit smoking and use that money that you used to use on cigarettes to save for college for your child. Smoking and other bad habits add up. If you play the lottery, the chances of you winning are very slim. Yet if you use the money that you spend on lottery tickets to save for college for your child, chances are good that he or she will have a bright future.

There is no magic time to start to save for college. Ideally, every parent would start to save for college the minute their child is born. But this is impossible in some cases as many parents struggle to make ends meet. Other parents find that they borrow the money that they do save for college because they get into a financial bind and then are unable to pay it back.

Even if your child is ready to go to college, it is not too late to save for college. You simply have to start putting money aside in a safe place that is set aside especially for college. Even if you start with a few dollars a day, that will be less that you or your child has to borrow to be able to attend college.

Many parents feel that they have plenty of time to save for college when their child is born. They neglect to do this because they simply do not have the money to put aside. But even if you put aside $20 a week, by the time your child is ready to go to college, there will be more than enough money, if you invest it wisely in an account that gets compound interest.

If your child is ready to go to college and you do not have any money put aside because you did not save for college, you can still start now. You can put aside a certain amount each week and pay for the college on a time basis. Many colleges will allow you to make time payments for the education as well as the books. Every bit that you save for college now will be less that you have to borrow.

If you cannot manage to save for college, try to put as much aside as you can to help your child and apply for a grant. There are various grants that are available for people who cannot afford to save for college but whose children still want to attend school.
